Malawi Children's Fund

Malawi is a small country located in Southeast Africa (as seen in the map on the left), with a total population of approximately 11 million people.  According to the World Health Organization the average life expectancy in Malawi is 40.2 years.  The per capita income is about $500 USD/year.

While there are many health problems in Africa, the challenges presented by the HIV/AIDS epidemic are monumental.  A 2002 estimate indicated that approximately 15% of the adult population of Malawi is infected with HIV.  In particular the impact on children is enormous, with over 470,000 children who have been orphaned by the disease.

Dr. Brian Bramson is currently pursuing an Infectious Disease fellowship at the University of North Carolina after having completed a dual Internal Medicine / Pediatrics residency there. A significant portion of his clinical training will be spent in Malawi.

Dr. Kristine Torjesen Bramson is a pediatrician working in Malawi as part of an NIH funded research project.   She is currently investigating the use of microbicide (germ-killing) gels to prevent or reduce the transmission of HIV.
